Sebastian and Madeline’s rooms are right across from each other and have this blank wall in between. When I was cleaning out their rooms recently I had a bright idea! I would make book ledges in between to put all their books. They are only 19 months apart and therefore are interested in similar lengths and ages of books.
Before this bright idea they each had piles of books on their books shelves that were hard to get to and overwhelming. I took this opportunity to clean out the books and put them all away in a large tote except for about 20, these would go on the ledges. I would swap them out about every month or so, while also adding in seasonal/holiday books when the time was right. Hoping this would inspire us more to read!
This was the wall I was working with and decided on four, four foot long ledges about fifteen inches apart (note the red tape).
Each shelf was made with a 1×4 (back piece) a 1×3 (bottom piece) and a 1×2 (front piece). I used select pine, while it is a little more expensive it is already smooth, sanded and ready to go. See below for the set up.
I went ahead and painted them white but they would look nice stained as well! When putting them together I screwed the 1×4 into the 1×3 from behind. I then took that piece and screwed that into the wall being sure to hit studs. I then finished them off by attaching the 1×2 to the front with a nail gun.
Thats it! Easy but adds a nice design that also functions well!
If you make these book ledges … Tag me! I’d love to see!
