I’m not going to lie, this DIY game came to me by happenstance. Saturday morning Sebastian was asking to do a project – most days he either wants to play a game or do a project at 7:30am. Usually my answer is no, but I’m trying to be better about giving him more exploration and learning time during this pandemic.
So I tried to come up with something quickly. He was asking to paint, which isnt my favorite project, because not matter what – Madeline has to join in. Paint and a 17 month old is not always the best match. Basically everything becomes a mess. Anyways …
I had this box of Wood Bits I bought from JoAnn Fabrics a while back sitting on the counter. I had just used some pieces for another project. It has a whole bunch of wooden discs in it. So I thought, well … I’ll let them paint these.
So once we got started I had an “ah ha” moment .. I told Sebastian to start painting two that matched. He loves matching games – it helped his little mind because he had to think of how to make the two match. He’s good at finding matches but creating matches was new to him. It took a little lot of explaining but he got the hang of it.
I joined in and made a few and Madeline made one, painted the chair, got up, got down, got up, got down, tired to drink the rinse water and so on.
Once we created quite a few matches I let them dry and sprayed them with a clear coat.
There you have it! Not only did it entertain him and help him learn by making them. It will also be something to entertain him (and me) at 7:30am for many days to come!
