I recently started switching some things out in Sebastian’s room to make it less “nursery” and more “boy room”. One of the things we moved in there was a wooden desk that my aunt had given us a while ago. I wanted him to have a place to go and play with toys that Madeline couldn’t reach. So we made him a DIY Bench to sit on and above I wanted something other than shelves with knick knacks on them.
After browsing Pinterest I thought a pegboard would be perfect! He loves to tinker with things and it can store a bunch of stuff on them. It can also be ever changing as he grows up.
I started out this project on my own but half way through my father-in-law took it over. I’m not gonna lie … it made it better, but it made it a little more difficult. So lets call this “DIY Friendly”.
What you’ll need:
- Pegboard
- Tongue and Groove boards
- Paint
- Drill / Screws
I cut my pegboard down to size. I had a specific size in mind so I bought a larger piece of pegboard. You can also get them precut at 2 foot by 4 foot.
I started out by painting my pegboard. I used Sherwin Williams Palm Leaf to add some green into his room. I only did two coats to leave a little more of a distressed look but three thin coats should be good.
This is where my father-in-law took over. I was just going to use regular trim boards to trim out the pegboard. He suggested using tongue and groove boards, but only using the groove. He cut those boards in half lengthwise to get rid of the “tongue” part and sanded everything down.
He then framed out the pegboard with these pieces and mitered the corners. The pegboard did fit perfectly in the groove. This also achieved having the pegboard sit far enough away from the wall that hooks could fit into the holes without hitting the wall.
Finally he screwed the frame together at each corner and used “L” brackets on the back to reenforce the frame so it did not come apart if too much weight was put on the board.
We hung it on the wall simply by screwing through the frame into studs.
