I’ve seen these “Scroll Wall Hangings” all across Pinterest and Instagram and always thought to myself … that really looks like a packing paper roll undone. I mean they are all beautiful and I love the rustic-ness of them but I did feel they could be easily (and inexpensively) made.
I recently found myself on the committee for my church’s Annual Ladies Christmas Tea and (surprise surprise) I am in charge of decorating the lobby and stage. I thought this would be a great place to try out this DIY that has been floating around in my head for a while.
Lets start with materials.
- One roll of packing paper (I found mine at the Dollar Store)
- Glue Gun and Glue
- Chalk / Ruler
- Sharpie
- Two small rocks
I started by rolling out the paper quite long. The idea is that the bottom has to roll up to give the “scroll look” so you need quite a bit of paper to do that. Once I had the look on the bottom I used cups to hold my roll in place.
Once I got it to the length I wanted and enough of the bottom rolled up I put a line of hot glue to hold the roll at the top and at the bottom. I also glued some small rocks (you can use anything with a little weight) inside the bottom roll on each side. This will help keep the scroll from rolling up on you. Keep the cups in place to hold until the glue dries.
Next, I took a ruler and some chalk to create some guide lines – depending on what you plan to put on the scroll you may or may not need this step.
Finally, I wrote out the verse I wanted one time to make sure it fit the way I liked. Then went back through and filled the letters in a little thicker.
Thats it! You could really use your imagination with this DIY – You could make longer scrolls with entire songs on them – You could use white paint and make the lettering more scroll-y. Next year I think I’m going to add a little color too!
