Sebastian is almost three and has really started to love playing games and doing puzzles. We stumbled upon a matching game at Home Goods and I have since been on the look out for games that he can play / understand at his age. Its been a great way to spend some one on one time with him.
I’ve listed below a few that we have found, how he’s doing with them and what they are helping with in the learning department.
Crocodile Matching Game
This is the game we found at Home Goods but I was also able to find it at Walmart. This is Sebastians go to game, the object is to fill your crocodile with everything on your list first. You lay out all the tiles (not showing) and take turns picking them up to see if they are on your “list”
I like it because its a little bit easier than the regular Memory game – you don’t have to “remember” as much. It has really helped with:
- Taking Turns
- Memory
- Identifying Food Items
Hi Ho Cherry – O
This game is MY favorite, it did take him a few times of playing this to really start to understand how it works. You choose your color and spin the spinner. You could either get 1, 2, 3 or 4 cherries and then you take the amount you landed on and put them in your bucket. There are also things that take your cherries out of your bucket. It has helped with:
- Color Recognition
- Counting
- Taking Turns
- Fine Motor Skills (the pieces are TINY)
Bed Bugs
I think this is a great starter game for two and a half to three year olds. Old enough to be around small pieces without putting them in your mouth. This comes with a bed and a bunch of different small colored bugs. The object is to get all your colored bugs with the tweezers off the vibrating bed. Sebastian LOVES this game and thinks its SO funny to stop me from getting my bugs. Its helped with:
- Color recognition
- Fine Motor Skills – those tweezers are tricky
- Good Sportsmanship – Sebastian always helps me get the rest of mine after he wins 😉
Candy Land
Good Ol’ Fashion Candy Land. I will say this one is a little bit more advanced to understand but its still playable with a youngster. Sebastian doesn’t quite understand having to follow the path. If he picks a green card he kinds just looks for any green spot instead of the “next” green spot. Like I said though, still playable and great for:
- Color recognition
- Taking turns
- Search and Find
HOOT OWL HOOT
This game I actually got on clearance at Walmart and was saving it for when Sebastian was a little bit older. However, he found it in the game cabinet and insisted on playing it. The concept is actually quite fun. You have to work together to get all the owls in the nest before the sun comes up. You do this by picking cards and each card has a color so you move the owls along like Candy Land. In the cards there are also sunshines that move a sun along. There is a lot of “strategy” in this game that is a bit old for Sebastian but he still enjoys it and thinks it’s hilarious when you get a sunshine card.
- Color recognition
- Team Work
- Strategy – as they get a little older
FISHING GAME
Nona and Uppa (what our kids call one set of their grandparents) bought this game to have at their house for when the kids are over and Sebastian LOVES it. Madeline even tries to get in on the fun too. While he doesn’t so much play it as a “game” he does love to catch all the fish.
- Color recognition
- Fine Motor Skills
- Patience (waiting for the fish to open their mouths)
